A huge heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended Light Up, submitted films, and supported The Slop Shack’s first event!

Light Up Film Festival was the culmination of months of preparing an event that could unite Brisbane filmmakers and spark the imagination of the community – bringing a collection of unique, bizarre and under-appreciated films out from the dark and into the light.

With over 140 attendees piling into Cinema 5 at Reading Cinemas Newmarket, the energy was palpable. With a two-act collection of 16 unique films (unfortunately stoner-comedy Blazed & Confused got a little too lit and got lost on the way to the festival), we bore witness to some rare and peculiar sights: mutant yarn children, blind cricketers, sock dimensions, and….uh… Dear Doonan.

Thanks to your support, we’re happy to announce that LIGHT UP will return in 2020 with even more films, a bigger cinema, and crazier adventures. If you want to see your work on the big screen at the next festival: get started now!

The future of filmmaking is bright, and in good hands, so make sure to keep a look out for future projects from Light Up’s 2019 alum:

Since launching in December 2017, The Slop Shack has grown larger than we ever anticipated. We have met hundreds of talented artists in South-East Queensland that are as driven to create as we are – and in 2019 we’ve begun to facilitate the grounds for aspiring creators to execute on their creative ambitions and participate in a like-minded community setting. Our mission, from the beginning, has been to unite this wave of prosumers – our imagination generation – and to assist those who aren’t enabled… whether for lack of resources, a platform, or encouragement. There are far too many of us sitting on incredible ideas.

So we’ve organised a short film festival to demonstrate the talents harboured in students and young filmmakers across South-East Queensland. We’ve expanded the notion of a traditional festival by opening our submissions to anything and everything – shorts, music videos, experiments, video essays, micro-docs, vlogs and maybe even impressive gifs (who knows?).

Featuring awards, special guests, free glow sticks and the chance to show your crazy projects on Reading‘s silver screen – we hope this event will light up faces, brains, and the community.

Thanks for checking out our new podcast!

March has been an incredible month for the team here at The Slop Shack, and we’re incredibly grateful to our audience for continuing to support our content as we move into the fifth month of Phase 2.

A few highlights:

SLEUTH was launched on March 22 and has quickly become our most watched video on the channel! The combined production of Sleuth and The Box Set have been our biggest project yet, utilising all of our individual strengths as a company, and I’m super proud of the result. A big thank-you to everyone who commented, shared, and gave us feedback. Sleuth will return later this year with new detective and a new investigation!

If you didn’t finish it, check it out on YouTube (I humbly believe the end is the best part).

The SLOP Podcast continued by featuring the entire uncut interview with casting director Tom McSweeney from SLEUTH. As an invaluable wealth of knowledge about all aspects of the film industry, aspiring filmmakers should not miss this episode. Although our audio had some hiccups (you may be wondering why I’m holding a microphone that is clearly not working), but Tom reveals some real gold nuggets of information for directors, writers, actors and casting directors alike.

Watch it on YouTube or Audio Platforms today!

The next episode, SLOP #17, will launch on Friday, April 26. It’s promising to be a special one, so mark your calendars!

Movies Are The Future released its third episode (fourth if you count the Best & Worst special), and returned to its full-length form (a move supported by the audience).  Declan & Dragon from Movies of the Future did an awesome job editing the episode, and will be taking care of all the editing for the show going forward.

Watch on YouTube or listen to the podcast on a variety of audio platforms.

The new episode will launch next week on Monday April 8th, and will feature a special guests in our new rotating fourth chair!

And on April 29, the MATF Avengers will re-assemble to release a spoiler special for  AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Some people take this stuff lightly… but not us. The episode will featuring pre-screening predictions, post-screening tears and a variety of special guests, so make sure you tune in!

And as you may have noticed from our Facebook cover art, we have some exciting announcements on the way. LIGHT UP will be officially revealed on 4/20.

LIGHT UP IMAGE.jpg.png

We’ve also got some new shows releasing in May & June, and are preparing for the return of SLACK in July!

Thanks again for an amazing month, and we hope April is even better. We couldn’t do this without you guys.

SLOP is back with a bit of a different episode this month.

Last week we released the first episode of SLEUTH, our new investigative video series, which covered the use of Time-Shifted Characters (aka the casting of younger and older versions of a character) in film and TV. Since we were also making a short film that featured such a concept, we went looking to find a set of rules or guidelines to help us cast three people to play one person at different ages (15, 35 and 60).

So, we ended up interviewing Tom McSweeney, a brilliant Hollywood casting director and an invaluable source of information. We featured some of it in the episode, but thought you guys would enjoy the entire 30 minute interview – as Tom takes us through not just casting younger and older versions, but his career, casting tips, and some fascinating anecdotes about mermaids… We hope you enjoy!

As an Emmy Nominated casting director, educator and director with over 200 credits, some of his recent work includes: H2O: Just Add Water, Tidelands, The Family Law, and Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

The SLOP Podcast is a monthly interview series where host Harry Sweby showcases talented youth and shares some bizarre, thrilling, and unexpected stories of success and failure. It releases at the end of each month.
